July Trike of the Month

Congratulations John Sayne!

This month’s Trike of the Month Winner has come a long way from zipping around on a Whizzer Motorbike back in the early 1950s!  But that’s exactly where John Sayne started his motorcycle career after riding on the back of his father’s Harley K-model for regular trips to the Harley dealer as a small boy.  John told us that he’s had motorcycles, in one form or another, since starting to ride at age 14.  Other interesting vehicles included a Cushman Scooter with a Salsbury engine that he had to "take back" from his mother after she started using it to ride to the grocery store!

All of that history is a great lead up to the motorcycle trike that John rides today, his 2000 Honda Valkyrie.  As most people know, the Valkyrie was a unique motorcycle that Honda created using a souped-up version of the Gold Wing engine.  It is known to be a bit of a "hot rod" with its 6 carburetors and was produced from 1996 to 2003.  The bikes are still very popular today and make terrific trike conversions.

John purchased this particular Valkyrie in March of 2012 as a two-wheeler with an enviable 4,600 miles on the clock.  Quite a find for such a popular bike!  He then set out to find the perfect partner to build his trike which turned out to be Roadsmith Dealer, Wayne Roether, at Trikes and More in Cincinnati, OH.  Wayne’s shop was located near a large hospital construction project where John serves as a Master Electrician and the two hit it off right away upon meeting.  John says that he has been very pleased and impressed with Wayne’s professionalism and the quality of his work.

In addition to his trike, John has a Honda Shadow (which he bought for his 65th birthday) and a 1980 Gold Wing. However, despite his collection of bikes, he still prefers to ride the Valkyrie trike when riding with his wife.  And, in an effort to make Roadsmith an even bigger part of the Sayne family, John’s brother Gary is in the process of getting his 2012 Gold Wing converted into a Roadsmith trike, as well.  We hope to see the two brothers on the road together at some point in the future and couldn’t be happier to have two new members of the Roadsmith Family.

Attention: Customers and Dealers, please send your trike photos, with any accompanying stories, to Doug Lindholm doug@trikeshop.com to be considered for future Trike of the Month Awards.  Winners will, in most cases, be used in our national advertising campaign as well as promoted heavily on the website and our Facebook Fan Page.
